(In Descending Order)

5. Deftones & Dillinger Escape Plan- The Fillmore Detroit: As a massive Deftones fan over the years, I am hyper critical when it comes to this band’s live shows. And quite frankly, the past few times I had seen them had been a bit disappointing. But the band was on fire during their packed show at the Fillmore in early May, kicking out the classics as well as the cuts from “Diamond Eyes”. For at least one show, the Deftones made me feel like I was back in the old State Theater in the late 90’s, raging out to one of their sets.

4. Volbeat- St. Andrew’s Hall: This is a band that is criminally undervalued band in the American market. The Danish band has a unique style of rockabilly, metal, and blues that had the fans at the sweaty St. Andrew’s in late March. Sure, fans might have seen them open for Metallica before, but on their own- the band put together a great 90 minute set. The tour paved the way for the band to play the States more and perhaps not have to rely on Nickelback and Shinedown for arena rock shows in the future.

3. Jay Z/Kanye West- Wells Fargo Center (Philadelphia): Say what you will about modern hip-hop (and I’ll agree with most of the negative comments), this was a minimal frills affair. No opening acts, no DJ in between, and no egos- at least on stage. Jay-Z and Kanye came out together an put on a two hour set that had the rappers bouncing back and forth between their biggest songs. People went nuts one song after another, as the hits kept coming the entire night. It will be a while before a new rapper can put together a show like this on this grand of a scale.

2. Soundgarden- UIC Pavilion (Chicago): Even if the band let the foot off the gas for the last few songs, it was amazing to see one of the biggest names of the grunge era back in full force. Chris Cornell proved he still had the voice and the ability to get from behind that acoustic guitar that’s seemed lodged to his hand the past few years and delivered a powerful set. With Pearl Jam toiling in some pseudo-hippie nomadic experience and Alice in Chains taking the year off, Soundgarden was your best chance to see a grunge god in 2011.

1. Rammstein- Allstate Arena (Chicago): The last time I saw Rammstein was a 45 minute set the Family Values tour in 1998, so it was a little taste of the madness this band brings to stage every night. In their nearly two hour performance, Rammstein proved that just about every single American band needs to take some pointers from these guys and fans got the full experience. Let’s face it, most rock bands’ show are not that entertaining and powerful and Rammstein proved that you can still bring out the big guns and give the fans a hugely visceral experience. Can’t wait to see them again in May right here in Detroit.

Other Shows That Received Consideration: Identity Festival (DTE), Pixies (Fox Theater), Avenged Sevenfold (Palace), Various Artists- Maryland Deathfest, Anthrax & Testament (House of Blues- Cleveland).

Well, I do have to give it to the guys in Avenged Sevenfold: in February, the band played to 12,000+ at the Palace even with a snowstorm laying down 6 inches of snow right before the show and now with their Uproar Tour date at DTE Energy Music Theater selling the place out- it’s safe to say that Avenged Sevenfold has found their way as an arena rock band. But the reaffirming fact of Avenged’s ascension into the arena ranks is just one of the storylines that took place during the first ever Uproar Tour show at DTE on September 9th.

With a capacity crowd at the show, and the weather looking gloomy but held off til later in the night- Uproar actually outsold the larger Mayhem festival last month in it’s first trip to Detroit (that’s upon a spot check of the crowd- any official verification is something that I couldn’t pull off). But there were some entertaining bands, and even more intriguing thoughts coming out of the day at Uproar. Here are some of the thoughts coming away from the Rockstar Uproar Tour:

-To Hell or Highwater: I knew something was up when the schedule seemed ahead of itself when I walked in and it took a little while to understand why. Fans will have to wait for the band to make it’s Detroit debut due to their unspecified reason for cancelling’s the Uproar date here.

-To Art of Dying: The Canadian guys should know all about cancellations here in Detroit: the guys were set to be openers when shows by Disturbed and Stone Sour were cancelled, so it’s no fault of their own. But in the band’s 30 minute set, the fans were ready for the hard rockers and lead singer Jonny Hetherington made sure to let the fans know how grateful he was for fans being patient. After their crowd pleasing set, the guys came back on the main stage to emcee the “Miss Uproar” pageant. Even with what looked to be a few drinks in them, the band kept the mood of the goofy event light and fun.

-To Escape the Fate: Was that a little sarcasm we caught in lead singer Craig Mabbitt’s voice when trying to get applause for some of the other bands on the bill? I don’t know if it was intentional or not, but it seemed like Mabbitt was a little less than pleased to be sharing the stage with some of the bands on the bill. I know name names, but headliner Avenged Sevenfold was not one of the targets, even if the comments were intended to be sarcastic.

-To Sevendust: Guys, please, whatever you do- don’t call it a career after your next album. After drummer Morgan Rose’s tweet about perhaps retiring after the next album is recorded, the band put together a piercing 35 minute set on the Best Buy stage and showing just how road ready the band always is. They were leaps and bounds above the other bands on the second stage.

-To Three Days Grace: Ok, after being a bit skeptical about the band being an arena act, I am slowly starting to come around to the band in a big setting. It’s not that the guys have bad songs; they have catchy songs- but I always felt like they didn’t command the big stage as well as when they played smaller venues. But during their 50 minute set before Avenged Sevenfold, the band ripped through hit after hit such as “Pain” and “Home” and made for probably the most crowd pleasing set of the night. It might have taken a while, but I feel like singer Adam Gontier has improved on his stage presence and playing to the crowd much better than he had before.

So, those were the major thoughts coming out of the last major hard rock festival of the summer. After a busy summer full of these sort of festivals, Uproar provided a nice wrap up to this year’s summer season of shows.

Yeah, one of these bands didn't end up playing the show in Cleveland (hint, it's below Black Dahlia and above Six Feet Under).

It was a pretty big weekend for metal in the Detroit area: you had the Summer Slaughter Tour hitting St. Andrew’s Hall on Friday night, followed off by the Rockstar Mayhem Tour, which brought a packed house to DTE Energy Music Theater on Saturday. So, needless to say that most people left one, if not both shows with their ears running and maybe a headache or two.

So, instead of creating two different reviews for each show, I decided to mash up my awards between the Summer Slaughter Tour (which I saw in Cleveland two days later) and the Rockstar Mayhem Tour. So, without any further wait- here’s my awards for the August metal weekend:

Best Before 4 P.M. Band Either Day: All Shall Perish (Mayhem Festival): The Bay Area metal outfit slashed right through the early sounds of metalcore by numbers and stoner metal to finally wake the crowd up in their 30 minute set and seem to be continuing to make their ascension higher on the metal hierarchy.

Best Welcome Back Moment: Six Feet Under (Summer Slaughter Tour): With Chimaira’s Rob Arnold and Matt DeVries in tow for a hometown show for the guys, Chris Barnes and company delivered a crushing 35 minute set at the Summer Slaughter and . Through pig squeals and guttural vocals, Barnes showed no stage rust as the band delivered.

Best Most Likely to Play at Comic-Con next year: Powerglove (Summer Slaughter Tour): Ok, here’s the gimmick: four guys who dress up in oversized medieval warrior gear and play thrashed up takes on video game theme songs. “Legend of Zelda”, check- “Mario Bros.”, check. It was utterly ridiculous and nonsensical, but after some of the bands that took themselves a little bit too serious before them, Powerglove may not have been awe inspiring, but they brought a levity to the day that was welcomed.

Scene Stealer of the Weekend: Megadeth (Mayhem Festival): I think with the band’s inclusion in the Big Four shows and putting out a couple solid albums in a row, the band has gotten out of their mid-00’s funk on album and in concert. Dave Mustaine and company could have headlined Mayhem and seemed to have more of a long term future than Mayhem’s headliner, Disturbed.

Most Dependable Rocking Set: Machine Head (Mayhem Festival): The band killed it with their last album, “The Blackening” and the first new song from their upcoming album (“Unto the Locust”- out September 27th) sounds just as good. Machine Head is one of those bands who should be a helluva lot bigger than playing the role of the first main stage band on. Nuff said…

Most Shocking Development: Whitechapel (Summer Slaughter Tour): Detroiters got to see Whitechapel on Friday night, but due to a undisclosed issue with the band’s drummer, the band cancelled in person in front of the fans in Cleveland. Let’s just say the crowd would have probably treated Casey Anthony better as the band was showered with nasty comments and boos. I am sure this is a moment that band wished that they could forget.

Those are the highlights and one lowlight of the weekend. I am gonna go rest up and transition from the metal weekend and get ready for the craziness of next weekend. See ya!

This is a shot from the last time Soundgarden played Chicago. My pictures didnt turn out this well.

For Detroiters, Soundgarden’s Chicago show was one of the closest chances you got to seeing the reunited grunge band on a tour looking to rekindle the fire of their fans from the 90’s and gain some new fans along the way. And with the band’s two hour set firing on all cylinders for most of that time, fans reconnected with the band.

Coming out to the “Badmotorfinger” era track “Searching With My Good Eye Open”, the guys in Soundgarden sounded like only the years had changed and did not have any effect of their musicianship over the years as they played behind the large backdrop of their “Badmotorfinger” album. Once the first song was done- then the barrage of killer tracks commenced: “Spoonman”, “Jesus Christ Pose”, “Let Me Drown” and others were thrown at the fans early. While Chris Cornell bellowed out his wailing and haunting voice, it was good to see guitarist Kim Thayil and bassist Ben Sheppard doing their thing once again (Cornell and drummer Matt Cameron have been entrenched in the music scene since the band’s initial breakup in 1997).

As the show progressed and for about the first 75 to 80 minutes or so, fans were getting “Set Of the Year” material as the band continued to play “Fell On Black Days”, “Pretty Noose” and “Outshined” among others. But as the band entered it’s home stretch, it seems like the band wanted to focus on the pre-“Badmotorfinger” days and those songs were received under polite, but not feverish response.

With Soundgarden headlining Lollapalooza in Chicago the previous year, I was still stunned by the 6,500 or so in attendance and leaving some of the rows in the upper deck empty. After so many years away, the guys in Soundgarden deserved a packed house, instead of a mostly packed one.

But for the fans were there, Soundgarden gave the fans the music that they wanted- for about 80 minutes. After that, it was hit or miss, but definitely still well worth the trip. It will be interesting to see how long Soundgarden continues to play this reunion show- a new album is on the way later this year. In one hand, Alice in Chains came back to almost bigger crowds than ever, while watching Stone Temple Pilots’ attendance numbers fall after a few years back. Hopefully, Soundgarden’s reunion bid will play out more like their Seattle breathen in Alice in Chains instead of fading away.

What's with all the covers, guys?

The last time Maynard James Keenan’s second most popular band, A Perfect Circle, played in Detroit during their first go around, it was a pretty jam packed show at the Palace back in 2004. Fast forward seven years, and the band is giving it another try and based by the hype and how quickly tickets sold out at the Fox Theater- it’s pretty obvious that the demand was there, but was the band up to the challenge of reconnecting with fans? More or less, Maynard and the guys were up to the task.

Coming on right around 9 P.M. for a 95 minute set, the band came out in a very similar style to how they did back years ago: with the other players (including Billy Howerdel and ex-Smashing Pumpkins guitarist James Iha) in the forefront, while Keenan took his customary spot in the background. The crowd reacted really well to the band’s biggest songs, such as “The Outsider” and “3 Libras” sounding just as a crisp and moody as they did in 2004. With his work in Tool and Pusicifer, Keenan’s voice is still spot on and continues to show him as one of the strongest visionaries in rock music today.

But I don’t think I would be the only one to say this- but I was a bit shocked at the amount of covers that the band played. Cover songs made up about half the set, and seemed to just be a way to drag out the set list to an hour and a half. Some of the covers worked- such as the highly haunting cover of John Lennon’s “Imagine” played way early in the set, but others- like the almost unrecognizable cover of Depeche Mode’s “People Are People” fell lost on the crowd.

It’s not that the crowd of 5,000 left disappointed or anything- everyone seemed to be pleased with the show. But I think I speak for most fans when I say that some of the filler could have been cut out. Perhaps trimming the set down to all originals and one or two covers would have made the set a little more consistent and would have left fans raving as they left the doors.

Unlike Keenan’s biggest band, Tool, who consistently play arena shows to adoring fans, A Perfect Circle is a theater sized act for sure and this night at the Fox, the band found a nearly perfect setting to reconvene in Detroit. Next time, trim down on the cover songs.

This year’s installment of the Vans Warped Tour is now over with, and with a good sunny and breezy day behind us, I didn’t see as many people burnt out early as I have with Warped Tours in the past. The overall crowd (always hard to estimate) looked to be about on par with last year’s crowd, but it seemed far easier to navigate through the crowds this year for some reason.

With the earlier than usual date for Warped (July 8th versus generally sometime later in July), this year’s festival snuck up on a lot of people this year. But for those in attendance, there was plenty to talk about as always. So, instead of filling up dead space in the article with describing Warped Tour- let’s just start to give out the awards for the scenes that took place at the 2011 edition of the Warped Tour:

Scariest Moment of the Day: During the Acacia Strain’s noontime rager of a set, the pits were on fire as the band launched into what was mostly an old school set and was well on it’s way to the show of the day until some tragedy struck. Midway through the set, a fan was severely injured during the set and even as the ambulances arrived, the fan was still not moving at all. It was a scary moment that cut the band’s set short, but we’re hoping the fan ends up all right in the end.

Highest Decibel Level of Young Girls Shrieking: No question- of all the bands I saw- this award goes to the Black Veil Brides. The music, as with their AP Tour performance, is a mixture of H.I.M. and hair metal (not always a bad combo), but a lot of it was drowned out by young teenage girls screaming every time they saw some guy in kabuki makeup. In the line for the signing,-check, during the set- check, on the way home in mom’s minivan- well hopefully for the mom’s sake, not.

The “I Know We Were Here in 1997, but Maybe We’re Getting Too Old For This” Award: Even though this reviewer would probably finish a close second, the guys in Less Than Jake played to a smaller crowd later in the day, and chatted during the set as to just how out of place they seemed with the rest of the bands on the bill. If Warped ever had a senior circuit, Less Than Jake would one of the forefathers of it and that’s not mean to be insulting because I’d be right there with them.

The “I Thought They’re be More People In Your Crowd” Award: It’s a tie between Dance Gavin Dance and Winds of Plague. The combo of August Burns Red and hometowners We Came As Romans might have taken away from Jonny Craig’s band set, which was still good, but it looked a little sparse. And even though Winds of Plague tore things up during their set, it was obvious a lot of the fans wanted their Jesus Metal as The Devil Wears Prada played at the same time. It’s a shame, because most fans missed a couple pretty solid sets.

Biggest Buzz: Fans were beyond psyched to see the final band of the evening, Asking Alexandria- who most likely won the tshirt sales of the day and hype of the day. Even though this reviewer missed their set, it was sure to be one of the bangers of the day.

Largest Crowds of the Day: Take your pick between Craig Owens’ new band D.R.U.G.S. and A Day To Remember. As was expected, both bands played the Main Stage to crowds that made it almost impossible to see, unless you hopped on top of a porta-potty or a view with binoculars. But both bands brought it and did a damn fine job in their 40 minute sets.

Well, those were the highlights of this year’s Vans Warped Tour. An interview with August Burns Red fell through, but I was able to interview Matt and Nick from D.R.U.G.S.- check for that interview to be posted within the next few days. Until next Warped Tour, whether it’s the senior circuit or not, later!

The last time the East Lansing football stadium hosted a concert was back in 1994 when the Rolling Stones hosted their “Voodoo Lounge” tour. Well, fast forward 17 years and no football championships later for the Spartans, U2 took over Spartan Stadium for a 135 minute set that served as a greatest hits set for the band in front of a nearly sold out crowd of 67,000.
Performing on a stage that looked most like an alien spaceship that landed in mid-Michigan, the band came out shortly before 9 P.M. with a flurry of songs from the 1991 album “Achtung Baby” , with “Even Better Than the Real Thing”, “The Fly” and “Mysterious Ways” starting off the show and getting the fans on their side right away.

On this evening, the old time U2 fans got what they wanted, with classic tracks like “I Will Follow” and “Pride” had fans shaking the balcony during those songs. Fans wanting to hear newer tracks from their “No Line on The Horizon” album would have been disappointed with only 2 tracks played from that album, but I get the feeling most fans were there to hear the old stuff.

As the band extended into the encore, the charity/world peace/stop hunger speeches from Bono were expected and so was the segueway into “One”, but playing the mid-90’s track “Hold Me, Thrill Me, Kiss Me” was not, surprising the crowd and fell on mixed ears in the crowd. But even with the uneven encore, the other songs in the band’s set sure than made up for it.

With their “360 Tour” nearing its end, to see the spectacle that is the massive “claw” style stage set up was truly a vision to behold, and sometimes took away from the performance after being in awe of the stage. But the performance showed that U2 can still put on a solid show and proves that even with a amazing stage, you do need good music to justify. U2 did just that on this night in Michigan.

To say that it’s been a while since Rammstein last played the United States prior to last December’s show in New York City is an understatement to say the least. It had been since 1999 since the German industrial titans had hit this side of the Atlantic, due to the band mostly trying to make it viable and profitable for the band to come here. The show in New York opened up the floodgates for the band touring here in the States and put together a nine date North American tour that brought the band to Chicago’s Allstate Arena to a sold out crowd of about 12,000.

Delivering a pyro-heavy 105 minute set, Rammstein demolished the crowd of mostly out of towners (I seriously did not talk to one person from Chicago that wasn’t working the event) with a flurry of new and old cuts that showed the fans what they had been missing all these years.
Starting with the opening cut from their “Leibe Ist Fur Alle Da” album, “Rammlied”, lead singer Till Lindeman and company gave the crowd their brand of pyro overload and explosions to accentuate the hard hitting music that sent the fans wild.

The band hammered the point home early with tracks like “Fruei Frei” and “Keine Lust”, in which the band was almost drowned out by the fans trying to sing along with the band. The band’s signature tune (at least in this country) “Du Hast” was during the climax of the show and with the tongue in cheek “P***y”, which featured a cannon that shot foam into the crowd (think
about it for a second).

The band’s encore was an old school affair for the band, playing “Ich Will” and the closer “Engel”, where Lindeman came out with a 20 foot set of wings that shot flames out into the air as a finale.
If there was one complaint, the band was about two songs short of a perfect set, leaving out “Amerika” and “Sehnsucht”, but other than that, it was quite a spectacle to say the least.

After waiting since their 1998 performance on the Family Values tour, it felt like I was seeing Rammstein for the first time again. With the sea of bland arena rock bands and wannabes that can’t hold my attention span for more than 45 minutes at a time, Rammstein made sure that they made my time well worth it and sadly, we need more bands like Rammstein and their type of show today.

Not too many cities could host not one, let alone two hometown bands on the band as the always popular AP Tour hit Detroit as the bands hit a sold out crowd of about 1,100 at St. Andrew’s Hall. Providing the hometown love was the Warren based I See Stars, as well as the Craig Owens (former Chiodos) lead band D.R.U.G.S. (Destroy Rebuild Until God Shows) made sure that Detroit didn’t let the tour down.

Lead by L.A. based goth rock band Black Veil Brides, this year’s tour kept the momentum going for the alternative magazine’s sponsored annual event, and made sure that Detroit sold out the tour three years in a row. BVB’s hour long set gave the impression to fans that the band was more than makeup and attitude, as lead singer Andy Six and company pummeled out songs from their debut release, “We Stitch These Wounds”. Plenty of BVB wannabes, complete in identical face makeup to the guys in the Brides- which gives the band gave off a image vibe reminiscent of early era Motley Crue and Kiss. Oh yeah, and the music made sure it wasn’t lax, with songs like “Beautiful Remains” and “Secret Weapon” sounding crisp and fresh and make sure that even the newest listener was entertained. Even the parents of the younger fans that dominated the crowd could at least appreciate the stage presence of the Black Veil Brides and reminiscence about their days seeing the previously mentioned bands.

Ex-Chiodos lead singer Craig Owens’ new band D.R.U.G.S. played the role of co-headliner, and with rumored new girlfriend Ashlee Simpson absent, it gave Owens the chance to shine. Given the fans divided between Owens’ former band and new band, he seemed to have the crowd on his side. To say the least, Owens has had a rough few years with drug abuse, but the work he’s done with D.R.U.G.S. seems to have the former Chiodos lead singer moving in the right direction. It wasn’t surprising to see probably 20-25 percent of the crowd leave after D.R.U.G.S’ set, but they missed a solid set from Black Veil Brides.

Of the early bands, Richmond, Virginia’s Conditions seemed to be the tightest and most catchiest band in the early set. In their 25 minute set, the band avoided the screamo tendencies (which Warren’s I See Stars seemed to delve into wholeheartedly), as well as the full on emo-pop tendencies (yes, that would include the Paramore-ish sounding Versaemerge).

Most of the groups on this year’s installment of the AP Tour made the most of their time on stage, and at least for the few of the bands, made sure that people would be looking for them on tours later in the year.

Wish my seats were this close, I was touching the rafters where I was at.

Heavy metal legend Ozzy Osbourne hasn’t exactly maintained his cred during the past decade. Even though his OzzFest went pretty strong through most of the last decade, reality shows and shameless promotion gave Osbourne a little bit of the credibility he spent 30-odd years cultivating.

With Ozzy’s latest album, “Scream” out since last summer and puts the emphasis back on Ozzy’s music ventures rather than extracurricular activites, it is good to see the Prince of Darkness back out and touring. During his almost way too short 90 minute set at the Palace on Saturday night in front of a crowd of roughly 11,000, Osbourne used his short on stage time wisely, focusing in on the man’s major hits from his Black Sabbath and solo days instead of the new material.

Kicking off the set with “Bark At the Moon”, Ozzy proved that even though he can’t string a sentence together in conversation, his singing voice still remains strong. On classics like “No More Tears” and “Crazy Train”, Osbourne sounded like he did 20 years ago and the crowd ate it all up.

If you have seen Osbourne in the past ten years, this set wouldn’t have felt much different to you: a parody montage of pop culture at the beginning (which included a humorous take on “Jersey Shore”), and Osbourne’s stage banter wasn’t anything that we haven’t heard the past 15 or 20 years. What was new was guitarist Gus G., who made his Detroit debut with Ozzy on this tour. Gus’ skills are definitely there, but he’s got a long way to go if he plans of being as memorable to Ozzy fans as Randy Rhoads or Zakk Wylde, but live- he shows signs of hope of being a quality guitarist in fans’ eyes.

With Ozzy’s latest tour, it was obviously that the musicianship and vocals are still there, which made the fans happy. But as Ozzy gets into his early 60’s, you can tell that a 90 minute set may want fans hoping for a longer set, but this may be the limit to Ozzy’s abilites on a nearly every night basis.

Slash’s solo band delivered a 45 minute set of Myles Kennedy’s powerful vocals, and covered material from the solo album, as well as Guns n Roses classic and cuts from Slash’s other band, Velvet Revolver. Hey Slash, as much as I like Corey Taylor (the highly rumored replacement for Scott Weiland in Velvet Revolver), you may just want to look to the guy singing for him now as Velvet Revolver’s next lead singer. Just a thought…
