Friendo Making Friends at Majestic Cafe

Don't confuse them with the movie "No Country For Old Men" like Wikipedia has.

When you search for the group Friendo in Wikipedia, for some weird reason it takes you to the reference made by Javier Bardem’s character in the award winning film No Country For Old Men before killing someone. I don’t know if the Calgary-based trio Friendo had that in mind, but I guess that’s something now seared in my memory.

Movie references aside, the members of Friendo are pumping out lo-fi indie rock that hearkens the height of the alternative underground of the early 90s, even mixed with the music of the infancy of the genre of the 70s. But don’t let that tent-pole phrase fool you; the band is more akin to the artistic leanings of Sonic Youth versus the stadium rock of Pearl Jam.

The band has recently released their debut album, Cold Toads, which released on May 24^th. The seven songs, such as “Counter/Time” and “Callers” pack a serene, but quiet intensity that probably was born out of the cold winters up in Calgary. Comparing it to modern indie rock definitely doesn’t do this album justice- listening to the seven songs takes you back to a far more exciting in alternative music in general.

The band is out on the road through a hometown show in Calgary on July 1^st. But before that happens, the band will hit Detroit this Friday, when Friendo plays the Majestic Café. Make sure to check out Friendo and hear the power this band from Canada can pack.
