Mississippi natives Saving Abel had been on tour most of 2008 and 2009 in support of their debut album, which reached gold status last summer and is inching towards platinum status. So now that the band has had a few months rest while putting the finishing touches on their sophomore album “Miss America” (due June 8th), the band is done with their break and one of the band’s first shows back was an invite only show from WRIF (101.1) at the Crofoot Ballroom on April 22nd. The band rocked out for the somewhat rowdy crowd at the mostly full Pontiac venue.
Coming on shortly after 10 p.m., lead singer Jared Weeks and company gave the fans a taste of old and new. Along with playing deep cuts from the debut album such as “Drowning (Face Down”, and “She Got Over Me”, the band gave the fans an acoustic version of one of their biggest hits, “18 Days”. The band’s new material from the upcoming album seems in the same vein as the debut, so with songs like “Only In Hollywood” (the new single), if you liked the songs off the debut- the upcoming release should be just as well liked. Through spending almost 2 years on the road, the band has become a well oiled machine and it will be interesting to see where things go.
Oklahoma based band Taddy Porter opened up the show, and gave the fans some heavily southern influenced hard rock, along the lines of current contemporaries Black Stone Cherry and the now defunct Silvertide. The band ripped through a crowd approved 45 minute set, which include the band’s fast rising single “Shake Me” (yeah, I was a little disappointed when it wasn’t a Cinderella cover of the same name- but it was still fine) from their upcoming self-titled album, due June 29th.)
