MCB Review- Stone Temple Pilots @ Fillmore Detroit

Scott Weiland doesn’t know me, but he already found a way to make me mad two years ago at their show at the Fillmore. After going on an hour late, the show ended about 20 minutes after the Red Wings won the 2008 Stanley Cup. So, instead of reveling in the hockey glory, the band’s tardiness cost me that experience. Excuse me if me and Weiland are not on the best of terms.

But Weiland and the rest of Stone Temple Pilots made up from some of that lost ground as they put together a crowd pleasing 90-minute set back at the Fillmore March 31st. Starting with “Vasoline,” the band blasted out hit after hit to the sold out crowd. For fans of the band’s older material, it was a throwback to the days of actual videos on MTV and grunge (or some variation of it) as the band played massive hits like “Interstate Love Song,” “Sex Type Thing,” and “Plush.”

Lead singer Scott Weiland has had his issues in the past, everything from his leaving Velvet Revolver to alcohol related problems, but he seemed healthy and in good spirits on this night in Detroit.  After years of problems, Scott might be getting his act together, but who knows?

STP did break out some of their new material (album due out May 25th), such as the first single “Between The Lines,” which was met with polite responses during the set, but we’ll have to wait and see if the new material ranks up there with classic stuff.

So, just as with the Alice in Chains show a few weeks back, STP gave the 90s Alternative Nation crowd something to cheer about on this night in Detroit.
